WHO IS KORA?

A bridge between Denmark and Gambia

KORA is a Danish non-profit organization that works with locally based development projects in Gambia. We focus on concrete projects where better infrastructure, local production, professionalism and employment can create lasting value.

KORA works through a Danish association and a Gambian organization, which are connected through a formal collaboration. This makes it possible to combine networks, funding and professional resources from Denmark with local knowledge, relationships and implementation in Gambia. The projects have in common that they arise from real local needs and can create value over time.

KORA stands for

Knowledge • Opportunity • Responsibility • Architecture

KORA is both our name and the way we work.

Knowledge is the foundation. We combine local knowledge, expertise and experience so that the projects are based on the reality in which they will function.

Opportunity is the goal. We seek opportunities that can strengthen local production, employment, learning and the necessary framework around them.

Responsibility must be seen in action. We value integrity, documentation and responsible use of the resources we are entrusted with.

Architecture is the way we create sustainable structures – both physically and organizationally.

The name also has a cultural meaning. The kora is a traditional West African instrument with a strong connection to Gambia. The double meaning reflects our desire to build a bridge between Denmark and Gambia with respect for what already exists.

Our Vision and Purpose

Our Vision

We want a Gambia where more good initiatives can develop into sustainable businesses, facilities and local structures that create opportunities over time.

KORA's ambition is to contribute where knowledge, resources, collaboration or infrastructure can help make a concrete local potential possible. Our focus is Gambia. Here we will first build experience, document results and create a strong organization before a possible expansion to other parts of West Africa becomes relevant.

Our Purpose

KORA's purpose is to bring together expertise, experience, resources and local competencies around projects that can solve specific needs.

We do not enter into a project simply because the intention is good. There must be a clear need, relevant people around the project and a realistic path from idea to implementation and further operation. We are particularly looking for projects where one effort can strengthen local production, create jobs, build skills and improve the necessary infrastructure.

How We Work

A good project doesn't start with a solution. It starts with understanding the need.

Before we get involved, we assess, among other things, the need, the local roots, who should be involved, the practical and financial feasibility of the project, and the possibility of creating a lasting impact.

The Danish association contributes with fundraising, international partnerships, administration, financial oversight and strategic support, among other things. The Gambian organization primarily focuses on local dialogue, planning, logistics and implementation.

In this way, we combine resources and networks across countries with the local knowledge necessary to make the projects work in practice.

Local roots and transparency

Local anchoring

KORA's projects must be locally rooted from the beginning. That's why we develop the projects in dialogue with people and professionals who know everyday life, needs and local conditions.

The goal is not to provide a ready-made solution from the outside, but to build on local knowledge, existing resources and concrete opportunities. Local stakeholders are involved in planning, decisions and implementation. This strengthens ownership and the possibilities for the project to be run and developed locally over time.

Transparency and accountability

Trust requires transparency. That is why KORA documents how funds are used, who participates, what decisions are made, and what results the projects create.

We communicate openly about progress, challenges, finances and learning. Donors, members and partners must be able to understand what their support is for and follow the projects from decision and implementation to follow-up.

How KORA came about

KORA stems from a desire to create more concrete and long-term progress in Gambia.

Through many years of association with the country, it became clear how important jobs, well-functioning infrastructure and quality construction can be for local development. At the same time, the desire to connect resources, knowledge and collaboration opportunities in Denmark with local initiatives and skills in Gambia grew.

KORA was therefore established as a framework to develop and support projects in a more structured way – with a focus on local roots, accountability and solutions that can create value over time.

Basically, KORA is about bringing people, knowledge and opportunities together around projects that make sense locally and can be developed further.
